building the cake

Sometimes I feel like I get a little too ambitious with my baking adventures and today was one of those days. Luckily, this time everything turned out alright...so far. I baked a chocolate sheet cake from the Joy of Cooking cook book (my favorite cook book) and made butter cream frosting using Wilton's recipe but replaced the vanilla extract with a tablespoon or two of orange juice and orange zest. Here is the progress.

Chocolate sheet cake, nice and light.
Whipping the butter cream frosting.
Between each layer of cake is the orange flavored butter cream with orange marmalade on top, looks so pretty.
Before I got to this next picture with the crumb coat, the cake almost fell over. I tried to trim the sides down after I layered the cake and the marmalade made things a little slippery. I popped the cake into the refrigerator for a while and that seemed to do the trick. I was able to take it out, trim it down to a nice shape and put on the crumb coat. Back into the fridge until tomorrow morning when I attempt the fondant. Here is a sketch I did of our apartment, hopefully the cake will resemble it somewhat...
If the cake turns out ugly, at least I know it tastes good :) I will post pictures of the final cake this weekend. Happy Friday!
